Cotton Socks: Good or Bad?

Cotton Socks: Good or Bad?

Most of the time people spend time finding the perfect shoe.  What they don't realize is they should also take the time to find the perfect socks.  Finding the perfect socks can help reduce:
  • blisters
  • ball of foot pain
  • toenail problems
  • toenail discomfort
  • foot fungus
  • foot odor

At one time it was thought that cotton was the best choice in materials for socks.  This is no longer true.  Cotton socks can cause blisters, because of the friction of the material against the foot.  It also holds in moisture.  This can lead to fungus and bacterial infections.  Cotton also doesn't hold its shape.  After washing it can become stretched out and become abrasive.

Synthetic fibers are best in warmer weather .  They keep moisture away better than cotton.  They can dry quicker and they keep your feet cooler.  Some synthetic fibers include Acrylic, Teflon, and CoolMax.  Most synthetic fiber socks are more expensive than cotton, but in the long run can save you money, because they hold their shape more and last longer than cotton.

Wool socks are best for cooler weather.  They keep your feet warm.  They can repel water.  They also wick up to 1/3 of their weight in water vapor before they feel wet.

It is also important to buy the right socks for exercising.  Make sure they fit well while wearing your shoes.  They shouldn't cause blisters or fungus.  They should also keep your feet dry and well cushioned.
