Types and Symptoms of Arthritis

Types and Symptoms of Arthritis

Osteoarthritis- This is the most common form and generally has a gradual onset. Sufferers generally feel muscle weakness and deterioration, breakdown in cartilage, and possible bone spurs. This form comes with pain that can also progress but can also be relieved with rest. Osteoarthritis is a problem in feet when people are overweight due to the amount of pressure on the many joints in the foot.

Rheumatoid Arthritis- This form is a major crippling disorder and the most serious of the forms of arthritis. This systematically affects more than a dozen smaller joints during its course. Sufferers generally feel stiffness, fatigue, and weight-loss. Women are 3 times more likely to be affected then men. Rheumatoid Arthritis can alternate between periods of remission and exacerbation, it can be active for months or years then stop, sometimes permanently.

Gout Arthritis- This usually affects a single big toe joint and is extremely painful. Men are more affected then women. Heredity, as well as diet, dehydration, and water pills/fluid retention can be factors and can affect those suffering from this form of arthritis.

Psoriatic Arthritis- This form only shows up in 1 in 20 psoriasis patients. It mildly affects only a few joints usually the ends of fingers and toes. Psoriasis affects the skin, and in severe cases it can affect the joints. As the skin worsens so does this form of arthritis.
