Symptoms and causes of bunions

What is causing that bump on my big toe joint?

There are a lot of people that think wearing shoes that crowd the toes causes bunions.  This is not true for the cause, but it can make the bunion worse and cause more pain.  Your foot type is inherited and certain foot types are prone to developing bunions.  It is not the bunion itself that is inherited.

Symptoms of bunions:

- pain or soreness at the site of the bunion

-redness and inflammation

-burning sensation

- some numbness

Women are more likely to have symptoms of bunions than men.  This is usually because symptoms are more likely to occur when wearing high heels or shoes that have a smaller toe box.  If you spend a lot of time on your feet your symptoms may worsen.

There are also some other conditions that may appear with a bunion including:

-a callus on the big toe

-sores between toes

-ingrown nails

-toe movement may be restricted
