Diabetic Footcare During the Winter Months.

Diabetic foot care during the winter months

It is always important to take care of your feet, but it is especially important for diabetics to take care of their feet.  They are prone to more problems due to the cold and dryness.

It is important to check your feet often.  The lower temperatures can enhance neuropathy making it easier to for blisters, sores or trauma to occur on the foot without knowledge of it happening.

Make sure to keep your feet warm and dry.  If you have decreased sensation and you become exposed to the cold you can be exposed to frostbite so it is important to double check that all your skin is covered when going outside.

Clean and moisturize your feet daily.  Make sure to completely dry your feet and apply a moisturizer.  This keeps the skin from cracking which can cause the skin to break down and wounds to form.

Make sure to wear the correct footwear.  It should be supportive, correct fitting, and allow enough room in the toe box so your toes can wiggle.

If you are diabetic it is recommended to see a podiatrist at least once per year.  Contact Us at Dakota Foot & Ankle Clinic today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Brian Gale, DPM, FACFAS
