The Causes of Heel Pain in Kids

Heel pain is common in kids, because the heel bone (calcaneus) is not fully developed until the age of 14.  There are many causes of heel pain in kids, especially because of the stress on the bone that is growing at the growth plate (physis). 

The most common causes of pediatric heel pain include:

-Calcaneal Apophysitis. (Sever’s disease).  It is not a true disease, but is an inflammation of the growth plate due to repetitive stress.  It is common in those children that are active or obese.  It causes the heel to be tender in the back and bottom and is painful to the touch.  It is also the most common cause of heel pain in kids.

-Tendo-Achilles Bursitis.   This is an inflammation in the fluid filled sac that is located between the Achilles tendon and the heel bone.  A few causes of tendo-achilles bursitis include; wearing poorly cushioned shoes, certain disease (juvenile rheumatoid arthritis), or an injury to the heel.

-Overuse Syndrome. Heel pain can be a sign of overuse in kids because the growth plate is sensitive.  It is most common in kids involved in sports such as soccer, basketball, or track.  One syndrome of overuse is Achilles tendonitis which is an inflammation of the tendon common in children over the age of 14.  Plantar fasciitis is another overuse syndrome.  This is an inflammation of the plantar fascia (band of tissue that runs from the heel to the toes).

-Fractures.   Stress fractures occur in kids involved in sports when training intensity changes suddenly.  Acute fractures can occur in children under 10 years old from jumping just 2-3 feet.

Heel Pain in Kids

Heel pain can occur at any age and it should never be ignored.  If a child complains of heel pain it is best to get evaluated by a foot and ankle specialist.   Don’t wait too long!

There are a few signs of heel problems in kids:

-Bottom of heel pain

-back of heel pain

-limping

-walking on tip toes

-having a hard time participating in sports or activities

The most common cause of heel pain in kids is called Calcaneal Apophysitis.  It is most common in ages 8 to 14 years old.  Heel pain can also be a sign of other problems.

Heel pain in kids is different than most heel pain in adults.  One of the most common forms of heel pain in adults is called plantar fasciitis.  The pain is usually worse when getting out of bed in the morning or getting up from a long period of sitting, but gets better as the day goes on and as you walk around.  Pediatric heel pain does not get better as the day goes on, but usually gets worse with more activity.

Tips for running in the winter

Don’t let the cold weather and snow slow you down.  Here are a few tips to help you stay active during the winter

-Wear warm, light-weight, moisture wicking active wear.

-Change the way you run.  Try running by having your whole foot hit the ground instead of a heel to foot motion. Run in shorter strides to help maintain stability.

-Stretch!  Cool weather may make you less flexible so you want to warm up your muscles.

-Wear a single pair of acrylic sock.  Acrylic is designed to wick away moisture

-Put spikes on your shoes, such as Yaktrax walkers, especially if you are running on icy surfaces.
