Faqs Diabetes And Your Feet

Q: Why should a diabetic see a foot specialist?

A: Diabetics should see a foot specialist at least once a year for a check-up.  A foot specialist is trained to find problems before they become serious to avoid more extensive treatment.  According to the American Podiatric Medicine Association, have a podiatrist in your diabetic care can reduce the risk of lower limb amputation up to 85 percent and lowers the risk of hospitalization by 24 percent.  The American Diabetes Association also advises all Diabetics to see a foot specialist at least once each year even if there does not seem to be any problems currently.  To make an appointment Contact Us or go online to request an Appointment .

Q:  Why do diabetics need special shoes and inserts?

A: Diabetics need special shoes and insoles to help protect their feet from infections, ulcers, and other foot problems.  Skin damage causing open sores(ulcers) need to be prevented otherwise they could lead to more serious problems such as amputations or even deat.  Although it is recommended that you make an appointment and be evaluated by Dr. Gale, we do not require an appointment to dispence diabetic shoes through Medicare.  All you need to do is bring in a signed prescription from your MD stating that you need diabetic shoes.  If you have any question please give us a call at the clinic 701-255-3338 or at our shoe store, Happy Soles, 701-751-2443.
