Hammertoes are a common foot deformity that can cause discomfort and affect mobility. This condition occurs when one or more of the smaller toes bend abnormally at the middle joint, resembling a hammer. While hammertoes can be painful and limit footwear choices, early intervention and proper care from Dr. Brian Gale in Bismarck, ND, can help manage the condition and prevent it from worsening.

Understanding Hammertoes

Hammertoes develop when the muscles and tendons controlling toe movement become imbalanced. This imbalance causes the toe to bend downward at the middle joint instead of lying flat. The condition can affect any of the smaller toes and may be flexible or rigid.

Muscle imbalances result from structural changes in the foot that can happen over time. Hammertoes may also be exacerbated by wearing shoes that don’t fit properly. If your toe is too long and is forced into a tight shoe, this can lead to hammertoes. Hammertoes can also be caused by trauma to the toe or genetics.

Symptoms of hammertoes include:

  • Pain or irritation
  • Corns and calluses on the toe
  • Bending of the toe
  • Open sores
  • Limited movement
  • Inflammation or redness

Often, treatment starts with conservative methods. Your podiatrist will recommend wearing shoes that have plenty of room in the toes, orthotics, and toe exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles. You may also want to wear protective pads and tape the toe to help realign the joint.

In some severe cases, surgery may be necessary to repair the joint.
